Welcome to Charlotte’s Lot

‘Bold young writer with humour and skill’ The Scotsman
‘Nice gags’ Daily Telegraph
‘Jane Austen on acid’ Lady Margaret from Amersham

Hello. Meet Charlotte Lott: a slightly dizzy, Lady Di fan.

Charlotte lives with her husband, a ship insurance broker, in Dorking. If that doesn’t sound dull enough, she claims she is happy and fulfilled. Strange then, to see her in this picture, watering plastic dolls with disembowelled heads. Charlotte says, ‘my marriage is perfect and I never contemplate having an affair, unless like now: when I’m contemplating how I never contemplate having one’. Why then do we find her at the beginning of this audio book seeking the advice of Doctor Bedford, a celebrity spiritual guru, with some very intimate problems?

You may have met Doctor Bedford’s type before. If so, you will certainly recognise his slightly patronising voice in this audio book. Doctor Bedford is a busy man, a famous busy man, that gets over 2,000 emails a day from people like Charlotte that need his help. But he doesn’t mind because it’s a joy for him to help others access their potential and become extraordinary people. Or is it?

Once, the often endearingly (or frustratingly, depending on your perspective) moronic Charlotte manages to attract the attentions of healer/charmer Doctor Bedford, an unlikely relationship occurs and a spectacular change to the protagonist’s destiny results. Charlotte’s world is turned upside down and, as things progress, she discovers: what she thinks she has lost was illusory all along, as well as what she later comes to win.

If you have ever been told to breathe more deeply, when going mad feels more appropriate and less pretentious, then you will love this audio book. If you have ever picked up a self-help and thought, ‘isn’t that obvious?’ or seen a piece of installation art and thought, ‘that’s a bit shit, I could do that’ then download this audio book now!

Described as ‘Bridget Jones, inhabiting a Pythonseque plot-line’, and ‘Jane Austen on acid’ Charlotte’s Lot is an absurd and hilarious book about self-help, art, betrayal, discovery, self-obsession, sexual exhibitionism and cake making; the ultimate up-beat comedy, which laughs and celebrates our 21st century values.
